French Louie is the famous hermit from the West Canada Lakes. He left his home to come to the United States, where he worked in the circus and also drove mules on the Erie Canal. In 1868 he was drawn to the woods and he settled in the Indian Lake region. There he was a lumberjack, hunter, fisherman and trapper. He lived in lean-to's and cabins along his trap lines. He would bring his furs into Newton Corners (now known as Speculator) on a wooden sled. While there he would visit the tavern and have a drink or two. He would make maple syrup in the spring and tend to his garden.
French Louie would guide sportsman from the Mohawk Valley region. He would enlighten them with his many adventure stories.
"French Louie" Seymour died in Speculator in the winter of 1915. He is buried in the Speculator Cemetery. A photo of the sign by the fence of the cemetery is below.
